concept sketches and work in progress illustrations for editorial collage art commission. Neuroscience images in black and white are pinned on a board and paper abstract shapes are scattered around. Hand drawn pencil lines also feature
Collage of images related to neuroscience, including abstract neural network, a pipe valve, cloud-like structures, geometric shapes, and a suitcase, with a description about neuroscience and the concept of loaded luggage. Editorial illustration.

I was invited to contribute a science-focussed editorial collage artwork to The Transmitter, working with in-house Art Director Rebecca Horne.

The article explores the word 'mechanism' and how, in neuroscience, this word can have a number of meanings, making the use of this word somewhat complicated. The article calls for a clearer definition and better ways of implementation.

For the visual, we depicted 'mechanism' as a suitcase-like word with multiple shapes (definitions) resembling cogs and gears spilling out of the case. An abstract artwork, but fitting for this particular discussion. Images that connect to neuroscience and mechanics fill the background resembling a sort of pin board. The final piece has a very tactile work-in-progress feel which I think is really successful.

If you're looking for editorial collage illustration that visualises complex themes in science, technology, politics or current affairs, I'd love to hear from you!
